Flej's 2nd Letter: Unbroken
Code: 2015-01-17


This is your son FLEJ again. Continuing Year 883, Month 9, Day 23: We debriefed back at the camp. I visited with my grandparents and Hellene. I slept in my Special Forces Unit tent with Oskin. I decided to name my magic greatsword “Wally” since I took him from a wall.

Day 24
A strong storm destroyed much of the colony village. We did our best to save people, but 24 people died and many of the supplies were lost. We helped collect as much as we could and I even cut down more trees to help with the rebuilding. In the evening, we were called to a Special Forces meeting and given a new assignment to go inland for 2 weeks to find a potential place to move the colony and to seek out any potential dangers. We found out Oskin saw a “spirit woman” during the storm. Perhaps she knows the GREAT BEAR SPIRIT.

Days 25-29
We adventured and mapped our way. We eventually found mountains and fought 2 Ankhegs. Josephus, our rogue, died. We slept in a temporary shelter in the mountain.

Day 30
Traveling through the mountains, we were ambushed by 2 ogres. After we killed them, I spotted 6 more coming so we went into a magical cave with an illusion wall leading into it. I gave the group a strategic plan to use the entrance as a choke point so that we only had to fight 1 ogre at a time. We killed them all and then rested for a few hours. A magical stinking cloud trap hit us and we moved further into the cave, which ended up having weird tunnels that made no sense. There were poison dart traps. Oskin was separated from us by a magical wall of force and a pit trap. I went down into the pit and discovered a tunnel with dark elves. They knocked me out, took all of my stuff, and kept me as a prisoner, alone in a cell. They tried to torture me, but it didn’t work. I can only assume my friends made it out alive or are also prisoners.

Month 10: Days 1-27
They kept trying to torture me and failing. Eventually, a female dark elf tried interrogating me and failed when I intimidated her and identified myself. She claimed orcs don’t have kings or princes. Clearly you need to come here and teach her to respect the orc bloodline.

Days 28-30
More days passed sleeping in the cell. Two dark elf guards escorted me to a room where they tried to chop off my head. I was naked but I managed to get one of their magic short swords coated in poison and I killed the one who still had a sword. As I did so, three moon elves (1 female and 2 male) came to back me up. I like these moon elves. I now have two magic shortswords, which is nice. I’m hoping to reunite with my adventuring group, but I’m fine with living with these moon elves as well. I need to come up with names for my new swords.

Adventure 001
Welcome to Foundation Colony

The players arrived at Foundation Colony aboard the Ashford’s Elbow after a three month journey. It is late fall, right before winter. Once off the ship, they are escorted to a warehouse where they are given their orientation by Constable O’Dottemer, the chief law enforcement officer of the settlement.

Afterward they were given a tour of the settlement. After some free time (in which Flej attempted to “seduce” Helene, a local craftswoman), they were they led to the public house for the evening meal.

The characters were then released to their tents to sleep. Oskin attempted to leave the settlement at night, but was spotted by one of the guards. He was, however, able to learn most of the guard’s patrol pattern for future attempts to flee.

The following morning, the characters awaked by a dog barking (River – the blackish-gray mastiff). At breakfast, they were involved in a scuffle with some other colonists, including one who was a former Imperial soldier. Constable O’Dottemer reiterated that being a former member of the Imperial military is not a crime. After breakfast, they were given their first scouting assignment. They were told to explore to the northwest. They were given five days, even though the minimum time necessary to properly explore the area assigned is six days.

During the cold and rain-soaked trek outward from the colony, the characters encountered a band of Goblins. After cleverly dispatching with both the Goblin hunting band and the remaining clan at their cave, the characters discovered some interesting native treasure, including a small ornamental dagger, an ornate box with some strange marking and folded up white clothes, some black and red gemstones, a single coin (it might have been two), and a skull with arcane symbols on it.

The characters rest for the night in the Goblin cave. The following day, they continue their journey. The following day is uneventful: just more cold and wet. The following day they arrive at the bend in the river that marks the beginning of where they are supposed to scout. Oskin uses his ranger abilities to scout and view the surrounding area.

That night, the characters’ camp is surrounded by the Ellia’Aliel Tribe of the Moon Elves. The Elves do not speak, but attempt to communicate with the characters empathically. Most of the characters are able to make a mental link, but Oskin for some reason was unsuccessful. The characters determine that the Elves are not hostile. They are curious about the strangers and are interested in their items back. Luniska returns the knife, the box, and the cloths. The Elves are satisfied with the characters and give them three blue gemstones in return.

After their initial scouting, the characters begin their return trip. Oskin again uses his rangerisms to find a quicker path through the forest and back to camp. On the way, they come across an unusual arrangement of rocks, which turns out to be the ruins of an ancient building. They explore inside, only to set off a trap that lowers the entire floor below ground. They go into the underside of the build and locate what appears to be an ancient shrine of some sort.
As they approach, Oskin’s tattoo begins to burn intensely. An illusionary elf-like woman appears on a dais toward the rear of the room. Along the back wall are two weapons sticking into the wall. The woman begins speaking a language that the characters do not understand:

Oota singa bentar? Bentar oota singhalla-esti et timbre deh et Synaed
Pyr bentar singana deh emi paeista.
Teit! Teit o bentar singuestna-estee et timbre.

Eventually, as the characters continue speaking to her in a (consistent) language that they know, she adapts and begins to speak in a way that they understand. She recites the following:

“I do not recognize your tongues or dialects. You are not of my people and not from this land. You are fortunate that you have survived to find me, but that fortune is short-lived. Those that destroyed my people will find you. They will find you, and they will either kill you, or they will enslave you. Be gone from this place, from this land, and return to your homes. There is no safety for you here.”

When questioned, the image refuses answers:

“I am not bound to answer. My people are dead. My friends are dead. My God is dead. They are all dead.”

The image did refer to Luniska as “cousin.”

Finally, the image speaks the following cryptic, yet harrowing warning:

I can offer you no solace. Sorrow awaits: One that runs, will guide others to doom. One that fights, will suffer peace. One that seeks, will die with the finding. One that craves, will remain unsated. One that is marked will reveal the truth, to the despair of all.

The characters are then able to free the two weapons from the wall and escape from the basement back on the surface. They continue their journey uneventfully back to Foundation, where they expect some sort confrontation from the constabulary because of their tardiness.

Flej's 1st Letter: A Whole New World
Code: 2014-12-27

Dear King Skullsmasher,

This is your son, Prince Captain Flej Skullsmasher. I hope my letter makes its way across THE GREAT SEA and into your hands. I want you to know what I have done with my life and thus I will write you these letters. We never met, but my grandparents taught me all about the ANCIENT ORC TRADITIONS of HONOR and, even though you murdered my mother, I know you only did so because she had betrayed you and stolen me away. I think the two of us should work together for the GLORY of all races.

YEAR 883, MONTH 9, DAY 17
I arrived at the Coalition of Independent Nations (COIN) colony in THE NEW WORLD. During the voyage I met some good people, including LUNISKA BALLINETH (a human paladin who feels she has a destiny calling her), CALIA ERIS (a human cleric who doesn’t talk much), and OSKIN KELDER (a dwarf ranger who has a rebellious attitude).

Our ship was the 3rd or 4th group to be sent out, with the 1st wave of ships having left about 1 year prior. Of our 3 ship convoy, we were the only ones to make it. I think 1 had a mutiny and the other sank.

The settlement is ruled by a mage governor named Harador. Lady Smythe is an admin who keeps the place organized. Francis O’Dottemer is the mean constable who enforces horrible rules and imprisons the people here. His rules consist of (1) work; (2) no stealing, no murder, no leaving without permission; and (3) society works best with order. The society is composed of mostly humans and elves with some dwarves and a few gnomes.

There are 4 “scout” parties that are clearly special forces units. Each 1 wears a different arm band. My grandparents were sectioned off from me to go live with the merchant-class people while I am being forced to sleep in a tent with my fellow “scout” class workers.

I noticed no children are here so this society is doomed unless we take immediate action. I began courting a basket-weaver named HELLENE and intend to begin repopulating this village as soon as she will allow me too. I am encouraging the other men to do the same, with other women of course.

DAY 18
Some of my friends heard rumors of tribal elves living in the forests. A fight broke out at breakfast. I defended the weaker man and stopped the fight. The constable seemed angry that I had to do his job for him. The RED ARM BAND unit laughed at us; a local hero named Digby who fought off some goblins is part of that team. My friends helped smooth over the situation. Our team was assigned WHITE ARM BANDS and included not only the friends I mentioned but also a human fighter named Ari Edverd and a human rogue named Josephus.

We have been given a mission to go fill in a map with instructions to head north for 3 days and then return. They want us back in 5 days; they are bad at math.

We spent the day traveling. I am sleeping in a tree.

DAY 19
It rained a lot today. We killed 4 goblins and then 12 more. We had boar for dinner after finding some odd items in the goblin cave. I am sleeping in a tree again.

DAY 20
We spent the day traveling and filling in a map. When it was sleeping time, a group of mysterious elves appeared in the forest. We could not understand each other’s languages, but they had mind-speaking powers. We tried that, mostly unsuccessfully, but did return the items from the goblin cave to them. That seemed to please them and they finally went away so I could sleep in a tree.

DAY 21
On the way back to the colony, Kelder came up with a faster way and we found some ruins. The ruins had a trap that brought us down 40’ into the ground to some nice tunnels with some strange ancient society’s magical message left behind. The magical message lady was elf-like but not an elf. We taught her our common language and she answered some questions, but basically just warned us to leave this place or we would all be killed like her ancient society was back in the day. I was not frightened, but rather happy to get a powerful magical greatsword while our paladin took the magic longsword from the same wall. We then continued on our way back to the village and I slept in a tree.

DAY 22
We continued back toward the village. I slept in another tree.

DAY 23
We are arriving back at the village. I have a feeling we will be in “trouble” with the people who run this place. I will drop off this letter first and then find out what happens next.

A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.
